A "sport" such as this should not be permitted in civilized society.
Tuesday's announcement that Christian Kerring had died was no surprise. No headline that reads, "[UFC fighter] dies from blow to head during fight", should be a surprise.

It's speculated that Kerring, who was in his 33rd fight, had been carrying a concussion into the octagon when he touched gloves with Xavier Hamasashi, a Peruvian, noted for devastating head kicks.

Kerring had been concussed on at least five prior occasions (that we know of), prior to Tuesday's light heavyweight bout in Toronto. Hamasashi's tragic round kick, which struck Kerring in the side of the skull, was simply the last straw. His head could not take anymore abuse.

The human head is not built for this sort of ritual abuse. The human body is not built for this sort of ritual abuse.

This is not the first time a mixed martial artist has died mid-fight. In 2021, Octavio Jurillo was pronounced dead after several blows to the head whilst he was on the ground, "defending himself". Sergei Vlajec was killed instantly by a front kick from Xu Ling in a 2029 Bellator match. Carson LaMont was famously killed from an illegal blow to the back of the head after the bell by disgraced fighter Fabio Bellisere two years ago.

Young men keep dying in this sport. Those who don't are statistically almost certain to endure a lifetime of pugilistica dementia, chronic traumatic encephelopathy, or some other neurodegenerative disease which will cut into their quality of life, and eventually, their lifespan.

Roy Fearless' interview with 60 Minutes last month should signal the deathblow for this "sport". His halting, slurred speech, memory loss, and uncontrollable tremors are an indictment on those who made so much money from his forty-eight bouts.

So it's time to shut down the UFC. And all like-minded MMA organizations. It's time to render them illegal, to take their profits, use it to fund research into brain disease, and ensure that the young men and women whose lives have been so cynically taken advantage of, are looked after, the way they are not right now.
