Jabba's back story is getting the full-feature treatment.
If the rumors are true, next year will see pre-production on a brand new installment in the Star Wars canon.

Whispers from within Lucasfilm allude to a project tentatively-titled "Jabba Gangster", which is currently in the scripting process.

Lucasfilm President Felipe Ortiz declined to address Gangster while speaking to media at X/70 in Berlin on Tuesday, but it is understood to be a pet project of his which reaches back several years.

Ortiz confirmed that other projects have entered and exited the Star Wars pipeline, but recent struggles with Star Wars projects have convinced Disney to advance projects under the brand which they felt had more chance of success.

However, it is clear they like the way the brand is heading, with reports of enthusiasm within senior ranks over "AT-AT Alpha Squadron", TV show "Star Wars: Tarkin", and the in-development "Star Wars: Black Saber".

Sources confirm that "Gangster" will focus on Jabba's formative years as a member of a Hutt syndicate, under the rule of a powerful elder member. His rise through the ranks, and conflicts he undergoes along the way will help explain his character and temperament at the time of Episodes I - VIII.

"Gangster" is expected to premiere mid-2037.
